Lichens, or often called lichens, are unique organisms resulting from a symbiosis between algae and fungi that live together in one unit. Lichens grow on various hard surfaces such as rocks, tree trunks, and walls, especially in environments that have little competition for life, such as places with dry or cold conditions. The fungi in lichens function to provide structure and water absorption, while algae or cyanobacteria play a role in photosynthesis to produce nutrients. The presence of lichens is often an indicator of ecosystem health, because they are very sensitive to air pollution. Lichens also have important ecological roles, such as decomposing rocks into soil and supporting the lives of other microorganisms around them.
